Rorke's Drift was a mission station in Natal, South Africa, situated near a natural ford (drift) on the Buffalo River. During the Anglo-Zulu War, the defence of Rorke's Drift immediately followed the British Army's defeat at the Battle of Isandlwana earlier that morning on 22 January 1879, and continued to the following day, 23 January.

One hundred and thirty-nine British soldiers successfully defended their garrison against an intense assault by four to five thousand Zulu warriors. The overwhelming Zulu attack on Rorke's Drift came very close to defeating the tiny British garrison, and the British success is held as one of history's finest defences.

Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded to the defenders, along with a number of other decorations and honours.

This beautiful small chess set folds away for easy storage, but you will want it on display.

Each piece is hand painted and the board decorated with African icons. This is a Fair trade product and one that should be played and treasured for years to come.

26x26cm when opened.
